Fostering a Green and Safe Culture

UNSDG 3UNSDG 4UNSDG 8

Our department-wide ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System aligns with international best practices and industry standards for protecting employees in our offices and project sites. We also have an Occupational Health and Safety Representatives Working Group that continually monitors and measures our department's performance. Potential hazards in our offices and project sites are identified through regular safety inspections. When hazards are detected, we will determine their possible impact and develop suitable mitigation plans.

To raise safety awareness among our staff, we provide training in a range of topics, such as safe lifting operations for mobile plants, construction and environmental engineering safety, and site safety in maintenance works. To familiarise our staff with our safety procedures and instil workplace situational awareness, we conduct emergency drills at all staff levels.

In ArchSD’s projects, diversified practices have been initiated and applied on site operations by our contractors to monitor on-site sustainability performance and progressively outperform the industry for demonstration of best practices. Innovative and self-initiated practices were also introduced. The four major green and smart practices are described as follows:

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

  1. Install energy-saving lighting systems
  2. Use intelligent sensors
  3. Use renewable energy
  4. Build temporary transformers

Emission Mitigation

  1. Dust suppression
  2. Install noise enclosure and acoustic screen
  3. Operate hydraulic crusher for demolition work
Emission Mitigation
Waste Management & Reduction

Waste Management & Reduction

  1. Use pre-cast concrete
  2. On-site sorting of C&D waste
  3. Encourage recycling
  4. Upcycle of used materials

People

  1. Provide rechargeable cordless tools for workers
  2. Conduct volunteer renovation work for neighbouring stakeholders
  3. Establish a 24-hour enquiry and support hotline for stakeholders
Client Satisfaction

Safety Culture at Construction Sites

Adhering to the core values of professional integrity and sustainability, ArchSD has always been providing public facilities of finest quality for society. We maintain a robust ongoing stakeholder engagement with our key stakeholders, including clients and business partners, to ensure sustainability best practices are pursued throughout our value chain. We require all ArchSD’s contractors and suppliers to strictly abide by the Hong Kong Laws, such as the anti-corruption laws, upon submission of their tenders.

As a part of ArchSD’s commitments to maintaining project site safety, we require our contractors to follow our stringent safety requirements and industry best practices. We will provide them with site safety checklists, briefing notes, safety audit results, and other relevant documents as guidance. Critical information such as Work Safety Alerts issued by the Labour Department and other safety reminders will also be circulated.

To further safeguard occupational health and safety of contractors, our Departmental Safety & Environmental Advisory Unit will conduct surprise inspections and have site safety issues brought to their attention corrected in a timely manner.

In 2022, we conducted a total of 196 site inspections to gauge performance on the following issues:

In addition, we arrange regular project progress meetings to keep track of and review contractors’ environmental and safety performance. We also proactively and conscientiously discuss with contractors to formulate actions and remediation plans to improve substandard performance.

Promoting Sustainability Awareness

ArchSD is committed to collaborating with our industry partners and other stakeholders in developing and maintaining the public facilities for providing a better service to the general public, as well as achieving outstanding sustainability performance. During the reporting year, we conducted a total of 34 workshops and talks, 88 publicity events, to share knowledge and promote best practices on creating quality and sustainable built environment.

We recognise commendable and outstanding performance of contractors, subcontractors and site personnel in demonstrating good environmental performance, site safety and considerate manner in carrying out public works. We offer formal commendation mainly through two award schemes, namely the Green Contractor Award and the Considerate Contractors Site Awards.

Green Contractor Award

ArchSD organises the Green Contractor Award annually to encourage green initiatives e.g. energy saving, water conservation, waste reduction, emissions mitigation, and environmental management, etc. during construction, as well as to compliment contractors’ continual efforts in achieving sustainability. It was the twentieth second year in 2022 that the Scheme had been conducted and all our projects under construction in this year including maintenance projects which contract sums exceeded $30 millions participated in the competition.
