Description
The Pak Shek Kok Promenade is located right beside the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Science Park. It provides a breathing space for youngsters, who access the park through the cycle track lying along the full length of the promenade. 8 nos. of buildings including 3 nos. of public toilets, a pavilion, a management office, a refuse store, a refreshment kiosk and an open air cafe are designed as sculptural elements along the waterfront corresponding to different contexts of different project sites at various locations of the promenade.
A dynamic and contemporary design approach is adopted for the buildings to match the theme of the nearby Hong Kong Science Park and to create refreshing spaces for the youngsters. The 3 nos. of public toilets, one located inside the southern open space, one abutting the bicycle rental area and one attached to a bus lay-by are designed with different concepts to fit their contexts. Opposite external mirror walls with trees in between, external forecourt area with sculptural form basins and bus waiting spaces with tilted column and sculptural bench form different gestures for the three different toilets. Sail-like timber sunscreen and cascaded timber steps create a seaside atmosphere for the Refreshment Kiosk and the Open Air Cafe.
The same materials palette is employed for different buildings.Different types of fair-face concretes, pre-treated timber strips together with the painted steel features tie up all the 8 individual buildings forming a integrated whole along the promenade.
