Kai Tak Station Square
Description
Kai Tak Station Square aims to explore and maximize the potential of a public square through transforming to a tangible leisure and social hub that allows visitors to promenade, meet and interact. With the sheer size of 12 hectares, Station Square stands as the biggest urban square in Hong Kong. Like a city within city, it is designed as a sequence of urban spaces rather than one single square that embody the activities for the surrounding. The three main design concepts are:
A Gateway – An Urban Connector
Station Square is strategically located at the heart of Kai Tak area, acting as an urban spine connecting its vibrant mix of urban context, which bridges the past and present, linking new developments to its historical context. It functions as a key connector for the district, especially its axial links from the MTR stations to Kai Tak Sports Park and new living quarters.
A Place for People
Station Square is an urban living room and a place of gathering for the district. It is designed with a series of urban spaces for a variety of activities, such as festival events, lawn bowling green, children play areas, cycling facilities, etc. It allows a series of human ‘niches’, taking account of the forces from its vibrant context, to manifest as a place for people.
An Emerald – An Urban Oasis
Station Square acts as an urban oasis amidst the surrounding dense urban fabric, providing a green breathing space for its surrounding high-rises by maintaining natural wind corridors. With its extensive greenery and large water bodies, it helps to mitigate the heat island effect in the district level. The concepts of ‘Canopy of Tree’ and ‘Sponge City’ not only create an identity for this project, but also provide large natural shaded spaces for public enjoyment.
