Tai Po Recycling Station (GREEN@TAI PO)

Description

The Tai Po Recycling Station (also known as “GREEN@TAI PO”) is located at a narrow-strip site between Ting Kok Road and Dai Wah Street in Tai Po, with a site area of approx. 1950 m2.  It is aimed to enhance environmental education and help collect different types of recyclables in the local community, with a view to promoting green living at the community level.   As the site is narrow in shape, window walls were proposed on 3 sides of the main block for better transparency and enhanced interaction between indoor areas and outdoor space, whilst still maintaining sufficient room for public passage between Dai Wah Street and Ting Kok Road for improvement of urban connectivity.  The rear side of the building was turned into a landscaped garden with timber trail, with layers of bamboos to soften the existing fence wall of the neighboring site.    Turning site constraint into opportunity, the non-building drainage reserve and water works reserve areas are transformed into landscaped area.  It not only serves for outdoor activities, but also enhances public engagement.  Various energy efficient and sustainable features were adopted in the project, including use of recycled materials such as bamboo fence wall, design for natural cross ventilation, as well as energy-efficient installations.
