Kwun Tong Promenade (Stage 2)
Description
Kwun Tong Promenade is a revitalization project to transform the former Kwun Tong Public Cargo Working Area into a 1-km long accessible waterfront adjacent to the Victoria Harbour.
The Past & the Present
The site used to be one of the most polluted areas. Piles of recycled paper, deafening noise from the cranes and 3m high walls has deterred people from going near to the waterfront.
This project was a bold attempt to transform adverse city conditions through architectural interventions. The site now become one of the most popular scenic places and awarded the 2nd Best Public Space in “Hong Kong Public Space Awards 2016”.
Connectivity
Iconic follies are strategically placed at all major street terminations leading towards the promenade. They not only serve as monuments memorizing the glorious past of the industrial period, but also enhance the character of the urban fabric.
Openness, Freedom, Transparency & Greening
Kerbless design and amiable circulation design ties in with the concept of barrier-free access. All vertical elements are set back at least 8m from seawalls, creating an unprecedented 270 degree seaviews. Extensive lawns not only allow urban people to have a relaxing foot feeling, but also provide an intimacy with nature on this grass carpet.
Diversity & Night Activities
Activities in the site are diversified: different people can find their own “PLACE”. With varying atmosphere from dawn to dusk, it is a haven for all walks of life to enjoy diversified activities. Kwun Tong Promenade is truly “A Promenade for ALL”.
