Understanding the Building Process and Team Work – Quantity Surveyor

The job of a Quantity Surveyor is to prepare estimates and budgets for building projects, and to control subsequent expenditure. Quantity Surveyors are also responsible for dealing with contractual matters.

When all the design drawings are completed, Quantity Surveyors estimate the cost and prepare a financial plan. They will then draft the tender document and invite tenders from builders. The tender document involves tens of thousands of items which call for careful preparation. Fortunately, the job is made easier with the help of computer software. When construction begins, Quantity Surveyors need to carry out monthly review on the contractor´s payment requests. Payment is made to the contractor regularly until construction is completed. Quantity Surveyors then check the bills and calculate the total cost of the project, which is called the "final account". They need to make sure that everything is done according to the contract. Sometimes Quantity Surveyors may need to help resolve contract disputes.
