Understanding the Building Process and Team Work – Technical Officer

The job of Technical Officer is to prepare construction drawings according to the architectural, structural, building services, and landscape designs. Technical Officers also need to transform the Architect, Engineer, and Landscape Architect’s design concept into drawings, since the Builder will carry out the construction according to the details shown in the drawings. During the construction period, Technical Officers assist to check the building material samples and shop drawings provided by the Builder. Upon completion of the project, Technical Officers prepare as-built drawings for maintenance purpose.

Survey Officers (Quantity) assist Quantity Surveyors mainly in carrying out the following tasks, including preparing project cost estimates and budgets, measuring bills of quantities from construction drawings, drafting details of labour and materials and compiling documents for tendering purpose. During construction, they also participate in adjusting measured bill items according to variation drawings and Architect’s instructions. Upon contract completion, Survey Officers (Quantity) accurately work out the total cost of the whole project.

To become a Technical Officer, one has to be passionate on building design and have a basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting, as most drawings are now computer generated. In addition, meticulousness and thoroughness are also important for handling working drawings and construction details.
